Mastering
Specifications

Mastering tracks is an essential and important part of music. Our in-house master engineer can make your music even more special by boosting it in the right direction — analogue, hybrid, or with tape and restoration.

Overview

We can make your music more vivid and lively with that extra delicate touch. Mastering can be done analogue or hybrid and is done in one of our high end analog studios. Analog tape and restoration is also an option.

Our master engineer excels in recognising the boundaries where mastering meets cutting and cutting meets vinyl pressing for an optimised result at the highest level possible. All mastering issues can be discussed with our master engineer so your sound will be beyond your imagination.

Technical Requirements

Analogue Mastering Specifications

Formats Accepted
WAV · AIFF · FLAC · DDP Image
Lossless formats only
Bit Rate
24-bit preferred
16-bit works. 32-bit is overkill.
Sampling Rate
44.1 kHz or higher
48 kHz preferred
Compression / Limiting
Use with caution
Slight mixbus limiting is fine if controlled — otherwise avoid
Tracklist note: Tracks with pronounced high-end frequencies sound best at the beginning of each side. Near the end of a side, highs may sound slightly more distorted due to reduced playback speed.
Reference Material

Reference Tracks

Including a reference track can be useful. Only submit uncompressed files — AIFF, WAV, or FLAC. MP3 files are unsuitable due to data compression artifacts, and links to YouTube or SoundCloud are equally insufficient for reference purposes.

Side Lengths

Maximum Side Lengths — 12″ Records

Optimised sound performance requires careful management of side length against level. The table below outlines recommended maximums for key use cases.

Use Case / Level45 RPM33 RPM
Maximum levels approx +6 dB45 6 min33 8 min
Sufficient levels approx +4 dB45 8 min33 11 min
DJ use approx 0 dB45 11 min33 15 min
Album / maximum playtime approx −6 dB and lower45 18 min33 24 min
Longer playtime is possible but not recommended. Bass-heavy music reduces maximum safe duration significantly. Speech-only records can run longer than 24 min but this is not advised.
Best Practice

Tips

De-essers: Apply de-essers to vocal tracks during mixing rather than attempting to resolve sibilance issues in mastering. It is a far cleaner approach at the source.

Stereo Width: Avoid aggressive stereo width enhancement on loud cuts. Keep stereo content at a minimum 6 dB below mono content (M/S coding). For loud cuts, a 9 dB difference or greater is ideal. An elliptical filter is applied to convert the lowest stereo information to mono.

Add-On Services

Extra Digital Masters

Additional digital masters for online distribution can be ordered. The following are included by default:

Streaming
Streaming Ready Master (iTunes)
−1 dBFS, 24-bit. Minimised clipping, optimised for data reduction and loudness normalisation. Conversion handled by iTunes.
MP3
MP3 320 kb Normalised Master
Minimised clipping, optimised for MP3 sharing. Slight sound adjustments may be applied to reduce data-reduction artifacts.
WAV
16-bit WAV Masters
Converted from the original vinyl master. Suitable for standard DJ use and general digital distribution.
Additional formats with custom specifications are available on request. Pricing will be adjusted accordingly.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about ordering vinyl records, pre-production, test pressings, the vinyl itself, labels, sleeves, and shipping.

About the Order
100 records per order is our minimum.
You have to own the copyrights of the music and we need a Mechanical License to press your records. From a legal perspective we are not allowed to ship your records before we have this license. You can request one from the copyright organisation you are associated with. If you are not a member of a foreign organisation, go to your local music copyright organisation for further information.
We will get back to you as soon as possible. We strive to send your official quote within 2 working days. After you have received the quote please check everything very carefully — from your address to the official product you have requested. When you agree to the quote you will receive an invoice. After payment we will start processing your order and you will receive all details about uploading your music and artwork.
We will do our very best to produce your order as fast as we can. However, in the pressing of vinyl records many small things can cause a delay. We recommend scheduling your release date after you have received and approved the test pressing. ICONYC cannot be held responsible for deadlines of releases, scheduled dates for release parties, or any kind of agreements the customer made with third parties.
Yes, we can help. Please contact us for further assistance.
About Pre-Production
A lacquer is a 14-inch high quality non-magnetic steel polished disc with a special lacquer layer. Your music gets cut into this layer and the stamper — used to press your record — is created from this lacquer. This process is used for most records.
DMM cutting is almost the same as lacquer cutting. The difference is that the music is directly cut into a non-magnetic steel polished disc with a 100-micron thick layer of high purity copper. This is highly recommended for music like ambient, jazz, singer/songwriter, and classical.
A stamper is a nickel pressing plate produced from the lacquer or DMM cut through electroforming in a galvanic bath. We use various experienced partners for this delicate process.
Submitting your own lacquers is possible. Keep in mind that we cannot be held responsible for any problems with the vinyl caused by a faulty lacquer we received. We do not use stampers that have not been produced by ICONYC.
This depends on the length of the tracks and the volume of the cut — less music means a louder record. See the Mastering Specifications tab for detailed side length maximums.
Submit audio files in the highest quality possible. We advise having your tracks specially mastered for vinyl. Preferred format: WAV, AIFF, or FLAC at 24-bit and 48 kHz. See the Mastering Specifications tab for full details.
About the Test Pressing
Yes. We always send you 3 test pressings so you can review the visual and audio quality before we press the full order. After the test pressing has been approved, we start pressing. If you are not satisfied, contact us so we can improve the pressing.
We recommend listening on a high-end turntable with a high quality cartridge and stylus. Clean the stylus before listening. Also listen on different audio systems to ensure confidence in the quality.
Listen on different audio systems and try another cartridge or stylus to rule out equipment issues. If the issue persists on the record itself, contact us so we can improve the pressing if needed.
Go to iconyc.cc/testpressing and fill in the details of your project to confirm approval.
About the Vinyl Record
Vinyl for records is made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) mixed with the necessary additives to make high temperature pressing possible.
180g records are of higher quality, less likely to warp, and will last longer. They also feel better. However, the sound quality is the same.
Yes. We have a wide spectrum of colours to choose from. Visit iconyc.cc/colors for the full range.
No. Because the granulate is thrown into a compartment at the back of the press and melted into a vinyl puck randomly, each record looks different when pressed. The colours are the same, but the placement of each colour will vary.
About Labels and Sleeves
A label is the round piece of specially produced paper (not a sticker) pressed into the middle of the record. It can be a standard white or black label, or offset printed with your own design.
An inner sleeve is the thin paper sleeve where your record is placed for protection, usually inside the outer sleeve. Options include standard 90g (black, white, or brown kraft), 90g polylined, 150g offset printed, and 280g discobags.
Yes, almost everything is possible. Specify in Step 5 of the calculator, or contact us at greenlakes@iconyc.cc for more information.
Yes. Stickers can be placed on the inner sleeve, outer sleeve, or used as a seal. Inserts can be anything — download cards, postcards, booklets, posters. An additional fee applies for inserting. We recommend sealing records when an insert is added.
No, this is not possible. Without a label the centre hole would be too large.
About Shipping
Yes. Some countries have strict import rules and regulations, but we will always do our best to get your order delivered. Contact us if you are in doubt about whether shipping to your country is possible.
Records are packed safely in small sturdy boxes, which are placed in larger boxes. Large orders are shipped on pallets sealed with water-resistant foil. We ship with verified organisations such as FedEx and UPS.
Our production takes place in Vilnius, Lithuania. If you want to collect your order there, we can make an arrangement for you to do so.

Run-Out Area

The inscribed zone between the final groove and the centre label — a small space with lasting significance.

Overview

The Dead Wax or Run-Out Area is the part between the end of the music on the record and the centre label. Almost every vinyl record carries a text inscription in this area.

The ICONYC standard is the Catalog / Matrix number and the initials of the cutter. Additional text is an option — Artist Name, Label Name, a personal message to your listeners. Anything is possible. Maximum: 30 characters.

What Can Be Inscribed

Inscription Options

Standard
Catalog / Matrix Number
Included by default on every pressing. Cutter initials also added.
Optional
Custom Text
